During a midnight heist Valera cracks a legendary master-stone. To keep it from Darrow she shatters it, and the shards fuse into both their palms. He overpowers her and drags her to the Citadel.

Valera wakes locked in a reinforced laboratory cell beneath the Citadel. Darrow lays out the terms: she works for him, or they both die.

The countdown spikes their pulses, threatening to detonate the glass. To force their heart rates down, they engage in a cold, clinical, highly charged physical encounter to reset the magic.

Valera runs diagnostics from her cell workspace while Darrow watches every move. They bicker over alchemical formulas and realize they are each other's intellectual match. The physical resets continue.

A neighboring lab's pressurized gas line ruptures, flooding their workspace with lethal vapors. Locked in, Valera cannot escape. They discover the Citadel Directors engineered the master-stone trap to eliminate Darrow. They form a plan to use the synthesized cure to turn the vitrified blood against the High Council.
