Elara's ship tears apart in the atmosphere. She survives the crash but finds herself alone in a dark, bioluminescent jungle. As night falls, the sounds of the forest change, and she realizes a massive, unseen predator is tracking her.

Cornered against a massive tree root, Elara tries to use her flare gun. The alien drops from the canopy, disarming her instantly. He throws her over his shoulder and scales a massive tree, locking her inside his high-canopy nest.

Waking in the nest, Elara realizes the drop is fatal. She tries to fashion a rope. The alien returns, amused by her escape attempt. He brings her human-safe alien fruit, beginning the slow process of proving he is a protector.

Elara develops a severe fever from a minor scrape. The alien drops his terrifying exterior, showing desperation. He crushes glowing medicinal moss and applies it to her skin, wrapping his tail around her to monitor her breathing through the night.

A violent jungle storm hits. To keep her from freezing, the alien pulls Elara flush against his blistering chest. The forced proximity and dark isolation spark an intense, terrifying physical awareness between them.

The storm passes, but the alien begins acting erratic. His cyan markings flush deep red. Elara realizes his biology has triggered a feral heat cycle by her scent. To keep her safe, he tries to leave the nest.

Elara refuses to let him suffer alone and pulls him back. The heat takes over. The encounter is primal, highly vocal, and deeply explicit. He uses his tail to pin her hips, fangs grazing her neck, in a days-long claiming sequence.

The overwhelming scent of the heat attracts a massive rival predator. Leaving Elara safe in the canopy, the alien descends to the jungle floor and viciously slaughters the rival, cementing his dominance.

Weeks later, Elara's emergency beacon finally connects to a passing human military vessel. A drop-ship breaches the canopy. Soldiers aim weapons at the alien, ordering Elara to run.

The alien steps in front of Elara, preparing to die protecting her. Elara steps out from behind him, places her hand on his chest, and orders the soldiers to leave. She rejects the rescue and chooses to remain as the apex predator's mate.
