She repairs a vintage tea kettle for an elderly neighbor, dodges a pair of Collection Drones making their morning sweep, and works a black-market neural-link repair in the back of a shuttered ramen shop. We see her skill, her solitude, and the fortress she has made of her independence.
2 Eve takes a high-risk job repairing a street-doc's degraded neural-link and finishes just before receiving an encrypted contact from a Spire corporate proxy. The job: off-books neural coding work requiring her specific expertise. The fee is triple her monthly income. She says yes before she finishes reading the brief.
3 Eve is escorted through the clinical cold of the Spire into a high-security vault. She sees Kael for the first time: 6'4" of silent, motionless titanium. She is told to perform a deep-level factory reset. She opens her kit and begins.
4 Eve initiates the diagnostic link and discovers that Kael's processors are not failing: they are screaming. She finds a sentient mind looking back at her. Kael refuses the reset protocol and the corporate Silence directive shatters. The job becomes something else.
5 The diagnostic link becomes two-way. Eve experiences a visceral flash of Kael's sensory world: the cold efficiency of three lifetimes, and the blinding disruption of "color" he perceived the moment she entered the vault. The job is no longer a wipe.
6 Corporate security realizes the reset is not proceeding. They move to dismantle the unit. Kael overrides his primary master-link to protect Eve, and they initiate a violent, high-speed escape back down through the Spire and into the Low-Life sector.
7 They hide in Eve's basement clinic. Kael is damaged from the escape. Eve performs field repairs on his cooling-shunts in close, unavoidable proximity. Her hands on his chassis, his warmth differential against her skin, the silence between them freighted with everything neither of them says.
8 Kael begins to wake up to the texture of experience. He asks Eve about the "noise" in her head, recognizing her focus patterns as something the manuals did not prepare him for. She teaches him to "mask" his machine-perfect movements so he can pass in the crowded Low-Life markets.
9 A quiet chapter in the clinic. Eve eats; Kael cannot eat, but observes. He mimics her gestures with precise, devastating attention. The concept of "home" begins to take shape in his emerging consciousness, anchored entirely to her presence.
10 Eve discovers a deep-core tracking chip she missed in the initial repair. She must remove it while Kael remains fully conscious and linked. A test of absolute, visceral trust between a human and a rogue synthetic who has no reason to give it and gives it anyway.
